Hi,

I'm familiar with animating a humanoid on the X-axis or side scrolling but I need to figure out how to animate a humonoid going down or up the screen or on the Y-axis. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to animate on the y-axis without swapping images per keyframe. Is there a way to animate a humanoid using just one image walking or running down the screen?

Thank you for all the help.

Hello Eiko!

It can definitely be a tricky task, especially since it can be very useful to see the top of the shoes as well as the soles, and this would require swapping images.
One of the most important things to do is to not be afraid to scale the legs to make them longer or shorter, as this is the key to make them believable on the vertical axis.

I'll post here a couple of streams that are not quite perfect as this wasn't the main focus, but I hope they can give you some ideas:
Twitch: Last stream of the year! Update bindings on frame animations - YouTube
Twitch: Animating an 8-direction character in Spine Pt. 6 - YouTube

To sum it up I think these things could help:

  • Scale vertically the legs
  • Consider having a version of the shoes that shows the top and the soles
  • Possibly applying color during the animation to make parts of the legs darker can help to give the illusion of depth
