elffire If you simply want to deform the mesh directly, you can do so by turning on Soft selection
in the Mesh Tools view:

Note: Using the mesh deformation to animate your skeleton is fine if you will use the animation to create a video or still images, but generally weights should be preferred if you will use it in a video game or something using Spine runtimes.
