So i have just been (majorly) burnt by this!

Spine automatic back up does not work. what back up (seems to) actually does is make a copy of the previous save, making it so you have X copies of the same project, rather than saving every 15 mins.

bumping this because its super annoying, and now more staff are active on the forum maybe an update on this will happen? This was pre-3.0 but I didn't see anything on the change log

I think "Automatic backup does not work" isn't correct.
It saves old versions. That's automatic-backup.

It doesn't Auto-save. Sure. It never has.

So, formally.
BinaryCats requests an Auto-save feature. /o/

I'm curious. (Nothing to do with Nate's decision) What animation programs have you been using that do this?

I have to assume at the automatic backup is suppose to be an auto save feature, the settings for the time say:
"An interval in minutes, at which the project is saved to the back up folder".

but the project isn't saved. Currently, all this does is copy the version of the project which is in a directory (C:\Users\BC\Documents\Spinestuff\myproject.spine) to the back up directory, which means the backup directory has thousands (?) of versions of the same file. What use is it to have the multiple copies of the same file in the same directory? If that directory corrupts, all the backups have gone.

Huh. I've never seen that option. 😃

I take back what I said.
I suppose in that context, that Settings description is pretty ambiguous regarding what it's exactly doing. If it's doing anything at all at the moment.

What on earth does "that directory corrupts" mean?

EH, I don't know, the only real reason I could see for copying the same save to more than once would be encase that directory accidentally gets deleted or something happens to it. but that means you have to back up in different places. just my train of thought

I save quite often, certainly more often than once every 15 mins, just from having been though using pretty unstable art software. (Painter, and also SAI).
So I have lots of versions in my backup folder.
But not everyone's me, so I get it. That setting should really be clear about what it does.

I guess we could make it more clear. If Pharan didn't already mention this to Nate, I just did 🙂

Yikes, you're right that automatic backups weren't very useful. 3.0.06 has much improved backups. Backups for manual saves are named project-1.spine, project-2.spine, etc. Those are a copy of the project file just before the project was manually saved. Automatic backups is now automatic saving and those are named project-1-auto-1.spine, project-1-auto-2.spine, etc. This makes it much easier to dig through the backup file history.

Woo! thanks a lot, this feature is better than that silly ik improvement! ;-) :-P

What IK improvement?
